Questions about holy days

What are the holy days of obligation in 2027 in Florida?

Besides every Sunday, Catholics in Florida must go to Mass on January 1, December 8 and December 25, 2027. The Ascension moves to a Sunday, and the Assumption falls on a Sunday. All Saints Day is not a day of obligation this year.

When is the Ascension in Florida in 2027?

In Florida (the Province of Miami) the Ascension is celebrated on Sunday, May 9, 2027. Only the provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Omaha, and Philadelphia keep it on Thursday, May 6.

Is All Saints Day 2027 a holy day of obligation?

No. All Saints Day is Monday, November 1, 2027. In the United States, when January 1, August 15, or November 1 falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to go to Mass is lifted. It is still a solemnity.

Are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday holy days of obligation?

No. Neither one is a holy day of obligation, but both are days of fasting and abstinence. Easter is a Sunday, so the usual Sunday obligation covers it.

Does a Mass the evening before count?

Yes. A Mass on the evening before a holy day counts, the same way a Saturday evening Mass counts for Sunday (canon 1248). But one Mass counts for only one obligation. In 2027, Christmas is on Saturday, December 25, and the next day is a Sunday, so you need two Masses: one for Christmas (from the evening of December 24 through December 25) and one for Sunday (from the evening of December 25 through December 26).
