When is Ash Wednesday 2027?

Ash Wednesday is Wednesday, February 10, 2027. It is the first day of Lent. Easter is March 28, 2027.

Is Ash Wednesday a holy day of obligation?

No. Catholics are not required to go to Mass that day, and receiving ashes is not required either. Even so, in many places it is one of the busiest church days of the year. It is a day of fasting and abstinence.

Who has to fast and skip meat?

Fasting applies to Catholics ages 18 through 59. On a fast day you may eat one full meal and two smaller meals that together are less than a full meal. Skipping meat applies to Catholics age 14 and older. People who are ill in body or mind (including a chronic illness), women who are pregnant or nursing, and anyone who would be harmed by fasting or skipping meat are excused.

Do I have to go to Mass to get ashes?

Not always. Ashes are usually given at Mass, but the Church also allows them to be blessed and given outside of Mass, at a short service of readings and prayer. A deacon or lay ministers may help give them. Check each parish for its times.

Where do the ashes come from?

They are usually made by burning the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday. That ties the start of Lent to its end.

Which Fridays of Lent 2027 are meatless?

The Fridays of Lent 2027 are February 12, February 19, February 26, March 5, March 12, March 19, March 26. Friday, March 19 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, and Church law says Friday abstinence does not apply when a solemnity falls on a Friday (canon 1251). Good Friday, March 26, is a day of fasting and abstinence.

When do parishes post Ash Wednesday times?

Many parishes post them in January or early February, in the bulletin or on their website. Until then, this page shows their regular Wednesday Masses. Those are not Ash Wednesday times. Call the parish to confirm.
